Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination

The Met Gala has always been one of my favorite annual events that provide a parade of haute couture. This year’s theme was entitled “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” and go figure, it’s causing quite the controversy, despite being approved by the Vatican. The Vatican even donated to the exhibit. Nonetheless, the Met Gala’s theme is being said to be “disrespectful” and “sacrilegious.” To quickly put this to bed, it was neither. What is disrespectful and sacrilegious: cardinals, priest, individuals of the church who prey on the youth but yet continuously denounce homosexuality and even perpetuate the untrue ideology that all homosexuals, particularly men, will prey on youth. Besides Madonna has been doing it for YEARS and yet “yall” still love her. We could discuss, but I’m more concerned about the FASHION!

For the women: Rihanna clearly showed up and showed out, letting everyone know she came to slay and conquer. Undoubtedly, THE BEST ensemble of the night. Not that Rihanna has many fashion mishaps. She’s definitely always a top contender when it comes to fashion and usually stays above the trend.

“The outfit is a three coordinated piece, comprising of a sculptural jacket and a skirt worn over a bustier dress and a custom made hat,” the brand said in a statement on Instagram. “In total, the outfit took 250 hours to sew and 500 hours to hand embroider by Maison Margiela’s Paris Atelier.”

“It feels expensive. It’s heavy,” Rihanna told Vogue of her look. “It was designed by John Galliano. We’ve had a few fittings, we’ve had a few colors. They beaded this by hand and I just ― it would be a sin not to wear it.”

Another reason to show up demolishing the red carpet: being an honorary co-chair for the event at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, alongside Donatella Versace and Amal Clooney.

As for the men, sir Chadwick Boseman, just NAILED IT!

Boseman “shines bright like a Diamond” in his ivory Versace ensemble, utilizing a crisp white button-down shirt and a white blazer as a base, ivory pants that include religiously inspired embellishments, a cape with gold crosses and other adornments, and red tassels connected by a chain tied the whole look together. All Hail King T’Challa. Wakanda FOREVER!
